Under his influence, more than 100 people from the Kuomintang Air Force defected with 42 aircraft. Premier Zhou Enlai repeatedly stated that "Comrade Liu Shanben was the leader of the Kuomintang Air Force defections." In September 1946, General Liu Shanben went to Northeast China to participate in the establishment of the country's first aviation school (Old Aviation School). On October 1, 1949, during the National Day ceremony, he led the formation in a flypast and received a review. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was awarded the rank of major general and made contributions to the creation, growth, and development of the People's Air Force.
